Trabzon SUMP

Trabzon SUMP

The Trabzon Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) project, supported by the European Union and the Republic of Türkiye, was launched on 15 June 2023.

With Trabzon SUMP, the aim is to improve transportation in the city and adopt an environmentally friendly mobility approach; projects that are safe, clean, accessible, and economical are planned to be implemented.

Within the framework of sustainable planning in Trabzon, the plan seeks to focus on people’s needs, ensure accessibility for disadvantaged groups, and increase the role of walking, cycling, and micro-mobility. The expansion of public transportation is also targeted. In this way, it is planned to reduce air and noise pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy consumption.

To achieve these goals, in addition to the technical team, the participation of stakeholders and citizens in decision-making processes will be ensured. In this way, efforts will be carried out for a more inclusive, safer, and cleaner environment.

TRABZON SUSTAINABLE URBAN MOBILITY PLAN

Using sustainable planning methods in Trabzon, the city’s future is aimed to be planned with a people-oriented approach.

Trabzon SUMP Project Components

The Trabzon SUMP project began with the CURRENT SITUATION ANALYSIS AND SCOPE DEFINITION phase (Component 1). Within the scope of Component 1, project stakeholders are identified, and the city’s current mobility situation and planning practices are analyzed in detail.

Component 2 focuses on GOAL SETTING AND STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT. At this stage, the goals and strategies for future mobility will be defined, and Trabzon’s Common Vision will be established.

Component 3, MEASURE SELECTION AND PLANNING, is the final stage of the SUMP. This phase will determine the actions required to achieve the developed vision and will focus on implementation projects.

CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT (Component 4) is a core part of the SUMP process and will continue throughout the workflow. With the participation of the metropolitan municipality’s transport planning staff, training sessions will be organized to strengthen institutional capacity.

VISIBILITY ACTIVITIES (Component 5) aim to raise public awareness of the SUMP, carrying out various communication and visibility actions. Your participation is not only welcome but also essential to ensure that your ideas are heard.

The final component is the BICYCLE LANE IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT, to be carried out along a 7 km route in the Akçaabat district of Trabzon. With Component 6, for the first time in Türkiye, a project related to a sustainable mode of transport will be implemented within the scope of a SUMP.
