Within the scope of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for Trabzon (SUMP for Trabzon), a study visits to Madrid and Malaga, Spain, was carried out between 25–30 November 2024.

A 13-member delegation participated in the visit, including Mr. Gürkan UÇUNCU, Secretary General of Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, and his team of 11 municipal staff, as well as Ph.D Tijen İĞCİ, Head of the EU Investments (IPA) Department of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, and Mr. Adem KOÇ, Contract Manager. Accompanying the delegation to provide technical expertise for the project were Mr. Jose LAFFOND YGES, Project Team Leader; Mr. Mokhtar BENSLIM, SUMP Specialist; and Ms. Meltem SAN, Local Project Coordinator, representing the contractor consortium TYPSA, Boğaziçi Proje Engineering Inc., and Kaiser Engineering and Consultancy Inc.

During the study visit, Madrid and Malaga’s sustainability strategies and projects were examined, and in meetings with various institutions, valuable insights were gained on sustainable mobility solutions, infrastructure development approaches, and innovative transport technologies that could be implemented within the framework of the SUMP for Trabzon Project. Furthermore, direct knowledge and experience exchange was ensured with experts and practitioners experienced in the field of sustainable urban mobility.

This visit, carried out with the participation of Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality teams, contributes to the development of planning principles by drawing on the experiences of cities facing similar challenges. Such visits not only provide technical knowledge exchange but also strengthen inter-institutional cooperation and information sharing. The knowledge and experiences gained in Madrid and Malaga serve as a valuable guide for the implementation of the SUMP for Trabzon objectives.
