The Opening Event of the Trabzon Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP for Trabzon) Project, which started in June 2023 under the Sector Operational Program for Transport (USOP), was held with high number of attendances on 26 January 2024.
The opening event of the SUMP for Trabzon commenced at 10:00 a.m. with the participation of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr. Abdulkadir URALOĞLU; the Director General for European Union and Foreign Affairs and Program Authority Head at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr. Burak AYKAN; and the Head of the Financial Cooperation Department at the EU Delegation to Türkiye, Mr. Odoardo COMO.
Following the opening speeches, the Project Team Leader, Mr. Jose LAFFOND YGES, representing the contractor consortium TYPSA & Bogazici Project & KAISER Engineering, delivered the Trabzon SUMP project presentation. The presentation covered the project’s main outlines and explained the necessity of developing a SUMP.
In the afternoon session, the event continued with the SUMP Projects and International Examples Forum, moderated by Ph.D Tijen IGCI, Head of the EU Investments Department. The forum featured presentations by TYPSA representatives Jose LAFFOND YGES and Fransisco BLAZQUEZ, as well as Mr. Cuneyt CETINTAS, Head of the Transport Planning Branch at Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department. The forum focused on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan outputs in Türkiye and Europe, with Mr. Çetintaş providing an update on the SUMP for Kocaeli planning processes and the current status of the project.
Subsequently, moderated by Communication Specialist Ph.D Murat CAGATAY, the importance and methods of stakeholder engagement were presented. Workshops were then organized under six SUMP thematic areas: Urban Planning and Non-Motorized Transport, Public Transport Development, Road Network and Private Vehicles, Governance, Environment and Climate, and Digitalization, after which the event concluded.
